Who was Allan Robertson is a short golf blog that takes a look at this historic figure in golf that not many people know about.

If you don’t already know who Allan Robertson is, then you really should continue reading.

He was born in Scotland on 11th September 1815.

Allan was a pioneer in Club Making and gave the world the first Iron golf club.

Not only did he build golf clubs, but he made feather-stuffed golf balls too.
His golf balls were later stamped with his first name ‘Allan’.
These balls are still sought after by collectors and are known to sell for up to 35,000 GBPs.

As a player, he was unbeaten on the golf course and became a living legend due to his golfing talent.
He is widely regarded as the ‘First Golf Professional’

Old Tom Morris, The Grandfather of Golf, trained as an assistant under Allan Robertson from 1839.

Out on the St Andrews Links, he created the first double greens which helped increase the popularity of golf.

He was also the first player to shoot less than 80 on the Old Course, St Andrews.

His Legacy

He sadly passed away after suffering from Jaundice, on the 1st of September 1859, at the young age of 44.

After he passed away, Old Tom Morris and several golfers at Prestwick Golf Club had a meeting.
The outcome of that meeting was to create a tournament to find the Champion Golfer of the Year.
The Open Championship was born in 1860 and has been played for ever since.

You can find his grave in the graveyard of St Andrews Cathedral.
