Impact Drills for Golfers
17. Oktober 2023

Impact Drills for Golfers is a short golf blog post that looks at various ways of training your impact position.
There are hundreds of impact drills out there for you to both learn and try out on the driving range.
Some of them are simple and some of them are a little complicated.
I like to keep things as simple as possible. Why make things more difficult than they already are?
Below, you will find some of my favourite drills. Some include hitting balls and some don’t.
To start with, let me show you a couple of drills that you can do without hitting balls.
The Windmill Drill
This drill is very simple. Just follow these easy steps to a better impact.
Step 1: Stand in the correct posture and place your palms together. (Left Photo)
Step 2: Keeping your left hand where it is, with your right hand, make a big wide back swing whilst maintaining your posture.
Step 3: Keeping both arms in a nice wide position. Turn your body towards the target until your right hand reaches the position where your left hand was in the back swing.
Notice how the hips have moved during the back swing and at the impact position.
Try repeating this exercise as often as you can. No need to visit a driving range to complete this one.
Lean and Through
This is an old one but still a good one. My old Head Golf Professional told how to do this one.
Take an iron by the head. With your left hand, lean on it, with the grip on the ground, approx where the ball would lie.
Take your stance and hold out your right hand to where it would be in the normal set up.
Make a huge slow turn with your right hand, hips and shoulders into the back swing.
Return to the impact position. Making sure that the weight is on the left side & your hips are turned towards the target.
Continue your swing with the right arm underneath your left arm and exaggerate the reach towards the target.
So, enough of the dry drills. What about a drill to practice that includes hitting some balls.
Let’s get to it…
Towel Before Impact
Take a folded towel and place it on the ground.
Place a ball on the ground approximately 3 balls distance away from the towel.
Take your desired club and hit balls from this position without making contact with the towel.
Please note: If you make contact with the towel before impact then this could mean that either…
Your body weight is too far right.
You are leaning to the right with your upper body and head.
You are losing the angle between your right forearm and shaft.
