Cocktails for Golfers is a short golf blog post that explores the best mixed drinks for post-golf socialising. Well, folks, I can’t believe it has been 5 years on a weekly basis that I have been putting these golf blogs together. It all started during the COVID pandemic, and now I have an average of 5000 readers per week. So what better way than to celebrate with some popular golfers’ drinks? Cocktails for Golfers John Daly – Grip it and Sip it! Also known as the spiked Arnold Palmer. Recipe: Fill a large highball glass with ice. Add 1.5 ozs. vodka, 2 ozs. iced tea 2 ozs. of lemonade. Gently stir. Garnish with a lemon slice. Arnold Palmer (John Daly without Vodka) Recipe: Fill a large highball glass with ice. 2 ozs. iced tea 2 ozs. of lemonade. Gently stir. Garnish with a lemon slice. Azalea Named after the stunning pink flowers at Augusta National Golf Club. Recipe: Pour 2 ozs. vodka, 2 ozs. pineapple juice, 1 oz. lemon juice and a spoonful of grenadine into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake then strain into a tall glass over ice. Garnish with lemon. Transfusion The ever-trendy Transfusion is the golf cocktail of the moment. While its origins are unknown, rumour has it that D. Eisenhower regularly drank transfusions at his club in Palm Desert. Recipe: Combine 3 ozs. vodka, 1.5 ozs. grape juice, .25 oz. lime juice. Pour over ice. Top with ginger ale. Garnish, if desired. Moscow Mule This stubbornly durable cocktail is refreshingly simple and can be adjusted in an infinite number of ways. Recipe: Fill a copper mug or similarly sized glass with ice. Pour in 2 ozs. vodka .5 oz. lime juice. Fill the glass with 4 ozs. of ginger beer and gently swirl it with a spoon once to mix. Garnish with a lime wedge. Bloody Mary The Bloody Mary is very popular at the 19th hole and during brunch. Recipe: Combine 2 ozs. vodka, 4 ozs. tomato juice, .25 oz. lemon juice, 3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, 3 dashes of Tabasco sauce, 1 tsp. horseradish, a pinch of celery salt and a pinch of black pepper in a mixing glass with ice, Strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Garnish with celery stalk, lime wedge and cocktail olives on a skewer. Glenmorangie Old Tom Morris, who created part of the course, named one of his holes ‘Morangie’ after the Morangie Farm and distillery. Today, Glenmorangie is the ‘Official Whisky of Royal Dornoch’ and in 2013, the course renamed the 18th hole ‘Glenmorangie’. Recipe: Serve neat Bobby Jones As one of the most famous names in golfing history, it’s no surprise that someone decided to name a cocktail after him. Recipe: Mixing brandy, crème de cacao, grenadine and lemon juice, Blood and Sand This mixed drink is one of only a few truly classic cocktails to feature scotch in the recipe. The sand part of the name may remind you of the bunkers, while the first part probably hints at one of the other hazards which can bloody your knuckles swinging out of or through them. Recipe: ¾ oz Scotch whisky ¾ oz sweet vermouth ¾ oz cherry brandy or liqueur ¾ oz blood orange juice Sand Trap This is a twist on the Blood and Sand cocktail, substituting the juice of lemons for blood oranges and using different recipe proportions as well. Recipe: 1 ½ oz Scotch ½ oz sweet vermouth ½ oz cherry liqueur or brandy ½ oz lemon juice Damn The Weather Golfers worldwide suffer from bad weather delays and cancellations, but the British Isles and Scotland may have arguably the worst reputation for wind and rain. Recipe: 1 ½ oz gin 1 tbs sweet vermouth 1 tsp orange liqueur 1 oz orange juice Whisky Mac Add both ingredients to a glass and stir together without ice. This drink is meant to be a warmer. Depending on the weather, some add a wee bit of boiling water, much like a Hot Toddy does. 1 ½ oz blended Scotch whisky 1 oz green ginger wine Kummel Kummel is a caraway-flavoured liqueur. It’s especially popular in elite Scottish golf clubs. The largest percentage of Kummel consumption in Scotland takes place at Prestwick Golf Club, Muirfield – home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers – and at The R&A. Known as “putting mixture,” this is ideal for golfers to drink before heading onto the links. Have a go at making some of your own cocktails. You may wish to use these titles as inspiration. Bogey Brew, Rough Rum, Caddy Crush, Links Lager, Putt Punch, Tee Tease, Saucy Slice, Par pour Let me know how you get on. What are your thoughts on Cocktails for Golfers?
