Blair Atholl Golf Club is a short golf blog that takes a look at one of Perthshire’s golfing hidden gems. The town of Blair Atholl is located just 8 miles North of Pitlochry, Scotland. That’s right, Scotland, not the Blair Atholl & Equestrian Club in South Africa! A Brief History Golf has been played in the little town of Blair Atholl since 1896. Back then, it was known as Invertilt Golf Club, and the members played on a 9-hole golf course. The golf course did eventually become an 18-hole golf course, but then later reverted back to 9 holes. The course that you play today opened in 1920 and was designed by James Braid. The Course He has designed a little beauty of a golf course, using the natural undulations and scenery. The surrounding area is breathtaking, and every hole offers these scenic views. Blair Atholl has great greens, which are in excellent condition, but can be tricky to read. The course begins on an elevated tee, offering a great view of the valley. That first tee shot is very inviting, and you feel like you can open up with a big drive. The 3rd & 9th holes share the same double green, which is right next to the clubhouse. Challenges on the course include the monster Par3, 6th hole, which plays 245 yards off the tips. Another challenge is the Par 4, 7th hole, where accuracy off the tee is key to a good score. The course may only be 5780 yards long, Par 35, but it will take a good all-round golfer to tame this course. Green fees at Blair Atholl Golf Club are only 15 pounds for 9 holes or 25 pounds for 18 holes. The Tulach Restaurant A family-run business looks after your pre- & post-golf refreshments. They have created a lovely dog-friendly, relaxing atmosphere with friendly staff and a good menu. The clubhouse has some great memorabilia on display and live sporting events on the big screens. Plenty of indoor seating as well as a nice terrace to enjoy on summer days. Opening hours are from 09:30 to 10:00, Wednesday to Sunday. I had a Ginger Beer and a Crispy Chicken Strip Burge, which were delicious. The village of Blair Atholl I couldn’t write about Blair Atholl Golf Club without mentioning the village itself. This place is full of history, beauty and very friendly folk who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. For non-golfers, there are enough attractions and places of interest to visit, including… Blair Castle & Hercules Garden Home of the Atholl family for over 750 years, this place is steeped in history. A history involving Mary Queen of Scots, the Civil War, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Cause. Don’t forget to visit the walled garden, it is stunning. Blair Atholl Watermill & Tearoom One of my favourite haunts in this neck of the woods. Kirsty runs a tight ship, delivering delicious soups and lunches, Breads and pastries with a warm welcome. My top tip is to try the carrot cake, trust me when I say that, it’s the best carrot cake in Great Britain! Atholl Country Life Museum This is only a small local museum, but it is packed with historic articles and stories. It is enough to keep you busy for an hour or 2.
