AIG Women’s Open 2024 is a short golf blog post that looks at the largest tournament on the Women’s Calendar. The Women’s Scottish Open is now over and all eyes turn to the AIG Women’s Open in St Andrews. This year the tournament returns to the ‘Home of Golf’ for only the 3rd time in the tournament’s history. History of the Tournament The AIG Women’s Open is one of five majors in the Women’s Calendar. These 5 major events include The Chevron Championship, The US Women’s Open, The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and the famous Amundi Evian Championship. The tournament was first played in 1976 at Fulford Golf Club, York. It was won by the amateur golfer, Jenny Lee Smith from England. Despite her impressive win, the purse of 500 pounds wasn’t won due to amateur status rules. The event was formerly known as the Women’s British Open. Fans still refer to it as the Women’s British Open. The amateur golfers, in the field, play for the Smyth Salver which surprisingly is a lovely trophy. The list of past winners includes Michelle Wie, Georgia Hall, Lydia Ko, Anna Nordqvist and Caroline Hedwall. Past Tournament Venues The tournament has been held at many golf courses over the years. Woburn GC Duke’s Course has held the tournament the most with an impressive 9 times. Royal Birkdale has held the tournament 6 times. In 3rd place is Royal Lytham & St Annes with 5 times. Sunningdale Old Course has held the event 4 times in the past. There is a long list of golf courses which have held the event twice, which includes famous names like, Turnberry Ailsa Course, Lindrick, Carnoustie Championship Links and Woburn Marquess Course, another great course. Last Year’s Flashback Held at Walton Heath, for the first time, the tournament was won by Lilia Vu with a score of 274 (-14) Lilia came away with a 1.35 million first prize and of course the trophy. AIG Women’s Open 2024 This year’s AIG Women’s Open 2024 will be played, once again, at the Old Course, St Andrews. It is the 48th time that the tournament title will be played for but it’s only the 24th time as a major tournament. The total purse will be 9 million from which the winner will take away 1.35 million. Finally, I ask the question who will win the event? What are your thoughts on the AIG Women’s Open 2024?
