A Golf Marathon
23. April 2024

A Golf Marathon is a short golf blog post that looks at the many Golf marathon challenges from around the world. We find ourselves well into the official marathon season but did you know that there are also golfing marathons? In fact, there are lots of golfing marathons that take place around the world. The first question is When did this all start? The first marathon golfer was a chap called William G Bloxsom, an insurance broker and the co-founder of the modern tee. He made a bet in 1874 that he could play 16 rounds of golf (144 holes) at Old Musselburgh Links (9 hole course) in one day. Playing with Bob Ferguson, a famous Golf Professional, they started at 6 am and finished 26 rounds by 7 pm. They would have continued if it wasn’t for Bob’s Caddie giving up on them. Further records One year later he was challenged again, this time to play 10 rounds (150 holes) at Aberdeen (15 hole course). The result was 12 rounds of golf (180 holes) and a 10-mile walk on top. This record lasted over 35 years when in 1910, Scottish golfer, Harry Lumsden played 12 rounds of golf (216 holes) in one day. On April 23rd, 2019, Eric Byrnes played over 23 rounds of golf, an incredible 420 holes, at Half Moon Bay Golf Links in California. He managed all of this with just an 8 iron. The attempt took 24 hours and he walked over 105 miles. A Golf Marathon Have you ever thought about challenging yourself or your friends to a golfing marathon?
