5 Shots You Have To Play in Scotland

5 Shots You Have To Play in Scotland is a short golf blog post that looks at the ultimate Scottish golfing challenges: Before anybody starts to argue against it, this is my list of challenging shots, not yours. This is the kind of list that may change over time, after physically playing the given shots. I could easily add a few other shots to this list like the Par 3 245 yard 5th hole at Anstruther GC. This has been voted the toughest Par 3 hole in the UK. (Have you played it yet?) 5 Shots You Have To Play in Scotland. First tee shot on the Old Course, St Andrews This may be the widest fairway known to man, but it is also one of the toughest. Addressing your ball is hard enough but when your mind is playing tricks on you, good luck. The 1st & 18th holes share the same fairway which is 129 yards wide, making it the widest fairway in golf. Eighth tee shot on Royal Troon The world-famous ‘Postage Stamp’ Par 3 may only be 123 yards long, but it still a tough green to hit. It is surrounded by 5 deep bunkers that guard the green including a bunker named ‘Coffin’ It’s not an easy shot, especially when it is blowing a gale. Tenth tee shot on the Ailsa Course, Turnberry After leaving the Lighthouse, which acts as a Halfway House, you are faced with this… A tee shot that must carry over the ocean and rocks to this tight fairway. It would be a fairly straight forward shot if it wasn’t for a stomach full of Hot Dog / Meat Pie and Coffee. A fantastic photo opportunity, but don’t forget to turn around on the 10th green for another great chance of a photo. Fifteenth tee shot at Kingsbarns Golf Links This hole can make or break your final score. It is a thrilling tee shot over the sea and rocks to this large green. Always plays a little longer than you think so make sure you have enough club in your hand. Seventeenth tee shot on the Old Course, St Andrews This is the ultimate test of driving skills, accuracy, length and above all, your mental skills. How much of the corner do you dare take off? Should you hit it straight, or with a draw or even a fade? So, are you a man or are you a mouse? All of these questions need to be answered before you step up to the plate.
